Fiction Authors - Archer and TPolChrissie

Background and Thoughts on Writing

Well, I've been writing on and off for 20+ years, but real life has always gotten in the way- raising a family, holding down a full-time job. I always wanted to write a novel, but have realised that will probably never happen. I really find fanfic a great relaxation. I love that the audience is already there with you. There is very little scene-setting to be done, and that the characters are already 'alive' for the reader.

I'm a huge Scott Bakula fan (there's a shock!) and find him easy to write. He has so many mannerisms, and such subtly in his acting. He's a hero, yes, but I love his vulnerability and the humanity he brings to his characters. I loved Enterprise and was sorry that some of the people involved with it took so many bad decisions and wrong turnings along the way. One of those was the choice not to have the romance that was so clearly flourishing between Archer and T'Pol grow to its natural conclusion. The chemistry was amazing and you have only to look at the Vulcan arc to catch a glimpse of what might have been. That relationship, in all its subtleties, was the inspiration for Daylight Fading and My Shadow in the Sun. I hope to write more. I also think more could have been made of the things we did get. Echoes was an attempt to give a little dimension to the Xindi, whose women and children, homes, lives, we never got even a hint of.
As to helpful hints- well it was years before I even got the courage to show what I'd written to anyone, but once I did I started to get good feedback and encouragement. I'm well past that now, and am happy to share what I write. I find that I have developed a definite style, and that I can almost always write on demand if I have to. Once I get inspiration I just go with it. Often I start a story not really knowing where it will end up going. Its almost like it writes itself and I just sit here and sort of watch it come into being. I've never have been able to plot or outline by chapter. Quite often the way a story goes end up surprising me!

Advice

My advice would be...just do it. A writer with any talent at all will soon know if what they are doing is good or not. I would say listen to the 'less is more' school of writing though. Avoid flowery, adjective-laden stuff. If you keep a lot of what you write plain you can add flourishes with great effect. And don't ever be syruppy or sentimental. Let people get to the emotion themselves, and let them be free to read between the lines and form their own mental pictures.
